Internet Solutions (IS), a leading converged communications services provider, is launching and hosting IS PodFarm – SA’s first free Podcast directory, as a service to local organisations who regularly issue Podcasts.

Podcast describes the technology used to push audio content from websites down to consumers of that content, who typically listen to it on their iPod (hence the "pod") or other audio player that supports mp3, at their convenience.

“As the technology catches on and more and more people want to access specific podcasts, so we have anticipated the need for a single holistic public repository,” says Hillel Shrock, New Business Development Director at IS. “We will sponsor the site, maintain it and make it easy for organisations to upload their podcasts.

The IS
PodFarm - http://www.podfarm.co.za - will provide a repository for podcasts, which represents another opportunity for companies to expose their brands, and a place for the public to get a comprehensive directory of available programmes. IS will not exercise any editorial control over the content but will rely on the users to log complaints against any with offensive content. IS will retain the right to delete any that have offended listeners.

“We are basing the service on a community concept of free to air broadcasts of business interviews, presentations and documentaries. Looking at international trends we expect the site to become a top favourite with every one from teenagers to seniors. You don’t need an iPod or mp3 player to download most programmes – a PC with the right software and soundcard is fine,” concludes Shrock.

FYI: The New Oxford American Dictionary has named "podcast" as word of the year, reports BBC News.

Defined as "a digital recording of a radio broadcast or similar programme, made available on the internet for downloading to a personal audio player", the word will be added to the online version of the New Oxford American Dictionary in early 2006.
